Why can I not make any selections from the filters lists? Is there some secret to making it work?
Boy I wish there was the old option of selecting just movies or tv

Filters work for me.
Just select one from the left and click and it moves to the right and becomes active. Click on an active one to move it back to become inactive.
Note that these filter out, you select those genres you do not want to see.

It would be nice if some earlier episodes of shows had 480p releases & that they were kept up 2 date more often

Ok, this is probably a dumb question. How do I use the subtitles on a foreign movie that has a subtitle link? After downloading the different links (usually I've noticed the subtitles are last) then join them how do I activate the subtitles so I can use (watch) them?

Thank you

melanie

the sub file should autoplay, just make sure you rename it(including spaces)exactly as the film i.e. Justin bleiber Suckface.mkv; Justin bleiber Suckface.srt

Melanie,
Thanks for your help, but I'm still not understanding. The sub file does not autolay play. Do I need to rename it before opening it (the rar file) or open it then rename it? And do I rename it anything I want or ?
Thank you for your help.
John

Froggy,

If your sub file is in a RAR, then yes, you have to extract it. If the RAR has an .srt file, then all you have to do is rename the .srt file to match your video file.

If not .srt, you probably have a .sub file and an .idx file. One of them may be in a RAR file, so you should extract it. You need to rename both of those files to match your video file.

You can name the files anything you want as long as the name is the same for the video and the subtitle file(s).

Last thing: did your video extract as one video file, or was it split into two (e.g. CD1/CD2 or a/b)?

Whoops, looks like henry explained it all first, and better.

The subtitles look to be in a srt file. I’m not sure if the what type of file the movie is until I extract it. Do I need to extract it first then see what type of file it is? Example, the movie Cargo is in 8 Winrar files then a subtitle WinRar file. Do I first extract the subtitles or do I 1st extract the movie?
Also, I playback the movies on my plasma TV having the movies on an external hard drive then plugging into my tv and watching them. This usually isn’t a problem unless there are subtitles that aren’t included on the original movie. Some are, many aren’t.
I greatly appreciate your help and instruction on this (hopefully) minor problem.

Thanks for the fantastic posts.

And yes, they usually extract as one file with the exception of Blue Thunder, it seems to have extracted as more than one video fie.

Also,
Is there some way to turn off subtitles? On some movies, ones already in English, there will be subtitles which aren't needed (for me). Anything I can do about this?

Thank you to all.

It doesn't matter which files you extract first. Just make sure you have a video file (e.g. avi, mkv, mp4) and a subtitle file (or files) with the same name as the video.

If you are using a player like vlc on your computer you might have to enable subtitles. If you are using an external hard drive you should check that your device (e.g. tv, dvd player, bluray player) is compatible with your subtitle file. If so, then usually your player will have an option to turn on subtitles somewhere in a menu. If not, then you either need to use another player or learn how to re-encode your movie to add permanent subtitles. Or you could set up some kind of streaming, but I don't do that so I can't help with it.

If you have a movie that is in English and has subtitles on it, but not in a separate subtitle file, that means they are likely burned in as part of the video encoding, and you can't turn them off. This is why a lot of people prefer to have separate subtitle files, so you can tell the program
or player whether to show them or not.

@froggy
You might be able to turn subs on/off with the remote control, same as you turn on closed caption subs for broadcast TV.
My TV, though (AKAI) will always display SRT subs if present, so I delete or rename them if I don't need them.
That's why media player units are useful, many more options than any "Smart TV" offers.
