HI,
Can anyone help with an AVI/Xvid version please.
Reason: I don't know how to even setup a free programme that does this, yes even from youtube tutiorials. And video playback in smart tv wont do any other format.
Pretty much a newbee.

Hi newbee. First off, the internet welcomes you.
To view the above file, please download either of these free codec packs and install into your Windows system. This is a first step to any proper Windows PC setup.

A. http://www.cccp-project.net/download.php?type=cccp
B. http://www.codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_basic.htm

If for whatever reason you don't feel comfortable with a codec pack, you may also try these 100% free media players.

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html
http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/

On the Mac side, you may install this player:

http://mplayerx.org/

How to install:

1. Download the file.
2. Locate the downloaded file. It should be inside the Download folder. Double click to install.
3. Double click any downloaded MKV. Windows will ask you what program you want to open the file with, just select either Media Player Classic, VLC or SMPlayer.

If the above steps still confuses you, you probably need a PC 101 course, available at your nearest community college.

Well aren't we the civilized type, You Know Shit. The guy was just unwilling to learn to use his PC properly, as he wrote:
I don't know how to even setup a free programme that does this, yes even from youtube tutiorials.

You Know Shit, are you always alone at the playground growing up? You gotta learn to teach your fellow men to stand on their feet instead of just begging for useless crap. Xvid AVI is a thing of the past.

Wow,
Thank you one and all.
But I didn't mean to cause any trouble.
I thank those who have helped me, and the spirit in which it was offered.
And again so sorry to have caused this fight.
I will be more prudent in future asking for help in things I haven't learnt how to do yet..

@Shifter
Don't worry about it. Some people are just looking for any excuse for a fight.

@You Know Nothing
Thank you for the last bit of info.

@Koobecaf
Thank you for those instructions, they are going to be handy to have to transfer things over.

And
@TomMix
Thanks for the support.
I can't for the life of me figure out how my request for help set this argument off.

I thank you all for your various inputs.

I don't want to get into a fight here, but reading his initial comment, it did seem like he's looking for a file that will play back in his smart TV, and not on his PC.

And for what it's worth, even though I know there are better formats, I still get XVID AVI files. This is because I want to share them with my parents, who watch only on TV and do not want to upgrade their player, and also with my brother, whose bluray player seems to decide on a case-by-case basis whether or not it likes an mkv or mp4 file.

@Barry
I have a TV that plays most MP4 and MKVs via USB. Some it chokes on, but I found that if I just ran them through MKVmergeGUI and saved to a new MKV, (which takes maybe 20 seconds) it almost always played.
Maybe it just uses a more standard header.
So I can get the more compact x264 encodes. Much better quality than Xvid for rhe same size.

But some few still failed to play, often seemed to be an odd spec for audio. So I reencoded audio and muxed that to the original video.

But I suppose that Xvid is pretty foolproof if you are giving it to someone else.

Well, to be fair, he never explicitly stated that he needed a free program "to play x264", only "to do this". Which could just as easily mean to create something he could play on his TV.

Further, that free player on his computer would probably not help him with his smart TV problem. Which is the one thing he WAS clear on.

Hey, TomMix, can you recommend some groups who make reliably good compact files in x264 (specifically for movies)? I see a lot of really big rips, but I would like to stick to smaller sizes, and I am just not familiar with the better quality encoders out there.

Thanks, Nicky. I had heard that Yify was to be avoided. I thought PublicHD made bigger rips, though.

@Barry
I'm not a connoisseur of rippers, you'd have to download different versions from different encoders and compare them directly, and I only get another version if one is really crap.

That said, for movies see http://www.300mbunited.me/
For movies and TV http://micromkv.com/
Mostly TV: http://minirlss.net/ (he has a FAQ at http://minirlss.net/faqs/ which gives notes on how he does his encodes)

The latter two do nice (I think) small 720p WEBDL, (about 300 MB/ 43 mins) and I wait a few days for shows to turn up rather than any other version. They also have some in 1080p.

The big-name groups go for speed, they want to release within minutes.

I have some experience with Avisynth for filtering video, which I can use with MeGUI to make x264. I do that if the source is say some fuzzy old VHS or has some other problems I can improve by filtering (colour correction, dirt, sharpening, IVTC, logos) and as a bonus I usually get a much smaller file. I also downmix audio to stereo since I have only two speakers, it saves sometimes a few hundred MB in audio on a big movie. I don't have infinite storage, it lets me defer deleting files or buying another hard disk.

Thanks for the info, TomMix. It took me a while to figure out my preferred groups for XVID, so I guess I can learn who's good for x264 as well.

I'll have a look at those sites. Thanks, again!
