because it's a handy container for the mp4 and any subs the capper wants to include. if you want just the mp4 use mkvedit to pull it out.

You are confused.
Mp4 and mkv are both container formats, not codecs. You can put just about any codec in either.
And both can contain video, audio and subtitles.

Mostly these days the video is x264 and the audio AAC, but it could also be x265, xvid, mp3, etc, etc.

Anyway, get MKVtoolnix for tools to extract and recombine files into MKV. Useful when I want to strip out unneeded subs, or replace them, or just make the file more compatible with my player. Can also chop the files to cut off promos, previews and trailers I don't want.

You can then use e.g. MP4box to put the audio and video into an mp4, without reencoding, which means it's fast ands no quality loss.
Plenty of other ways, e.g. Avidemux. ffmpeg if you can do command lines.

Go to videohelp.com forum for advice and links to tools. Just don't mention the files you want to work on or where you got them.
