@Xanthmaster
Thanks for the heads up. IMDB screwed up and listed language as English on the main page, yet French on the only photo. French makes more sense, as the whole production is French Canadian.

Glad the subs were here. BUT to clarify, it is not an IMDB error. The film was out in English OR, as here, DUBBED in French. Not the entire production is French; the main actress (Ellen David) is Anglophone, so is Adam J. Harrington (Michael in story) and, more to the point, so is the scriptwriter.

The fact that almost everyone can record both French and English tracks leads to confusion. But the original trailer WAS English, dubbed in French, so I guess the film here is the same. The French-speaking population then was 7M, out of 33M of Canadians total, so you might see why they'd work that way (people don't like subs at the movies, especially local ones). And while it won't change your experience I just wanted to point this out 'coz you might fall on others.

@waanaabe

Thanks for the clarification. I forgot your background. I probably should have asked you first :)

I've heard French is the primary language in much of eastern Canada. Also that legal proceedings might be only in French there. I didn't look at the bio for Ellen David, but I know Caroline Dhavernas is French Canadian and English is her second language. (Loved her in Wonder Falls, btw)

@Snickerdoodle

French is indeed first language for EVERYTHING (government, Courts, business, etc) but in Quebec ONLY. Nowadays, only in your private home can you really speak English! Even internal memos/emails of non-Quebec owned businessnes if operating in Quebec, have to be written in English! Anglos speaking French to other Anglos! And the countryside (where most people live) is full of anglo-hating red-necks. I ran from there as soon as I turned 16!

Montreal still holds the illusion of bilingualism, but not for long :-( The government raised the prices for studying at the likes of McGill University by like 100%, in hope to see attentence dwindle (some provisions are made for locals who've been here for generations but must prove long anglo lineage on both sides). It's insane when you think McGill was always a pioneer in sciences (mapping of the brain etc). This University even comes in in top 5% in fields like Engineering and anatomy! They (French Separatists) broke the province, now they're breaking the last great Institutions. All new immigrants must be "Frenshicized" right upon arrival to keep them from "the Englsih temptation" It's a problem, and sad, when "phobia" makes governments get extreme (right wing and all...) Businesses no longer no longer invest here, others ran. Montreal used to be twice as big (in numbers of people and revenue) It's mad.

Id you're tousist, you don't see it, but we're just a democracy in name. We have our picks betweeen 3 types of Quebec French supremacists at the Provincial level of politics and nearly separated from Canada in the 90's (which is when the most Anglos fled, despite being a great decade, economically! And they took their best minds, their families and their INVESTMENTS with them).

Now, Government doesn't even need the separatist threat to "rid us of the Anglos". Unlike other white countries where there is ethmic cleansing, here, skin color or religion is not what makes you persecuted (though racism is very thinly veiled)... DESPITE HAVING A CONSTITUTION STATING WE'RE BILINGUAL. I hate it here; despite perfect bilingualism (I'm not "detected";). But I was born in a French Orphenage, so hold French papers, thus can't even benefit from the tiny bit of protection some have from proven lineage. I so wish this wasn;t an issue. I'm considering emigration. Were my couple to fracture (he's a European immigrant with low English skills), I'd be on the next train. 25 years ago, I married in Europe for citizenship; I felt the 2020's coming. How I wish it worked out!
It's sad, 'coz when Montreal was Great... It really was. But now, everyday on the news, it's about how "French won another victory" and so forth. No more cohabitation. It's extermination and re-branding of new immigrants as "Quebecois" (most French-Canadians from Quebec would rather die than be called French-Canadian, BTW)

The LANGUAGE was NEVER threatened. The Province always had such a HUGE French majority (90%), but to some, nothing short of 100% is not good enough. People have a huge issue with the Brits winning the land over France in... 1759!!! If you've ever been here, "Je me souviens" is on all license plates, and refers to that, specifically! It's kind of akin to those still holding on to Confederate flags, but on a large scale! THAT is the context. It's passed down, generationally. That's why it targets Anglos and not visual minorities (thou there is a list of "good" and "bad: countries to come from, as in "more or less likely to assimilate, language-wise". Nuts. And while they fight some long-lost war.. infrastructures collapse (because they pour tons of money on things like language inspectors).
Did you know McDonald's can't have the apostrophe here? They'll endure -but smaller businesses, having to make too many changes, die. At some point, everyone had to take stuff like "hamburgers" and "hotdogs" out of menus, replacing them with "hambourgois" and "chien chauds"... Chinese (e.g.) restaurants had their signs measured, with Chinese writing at a precise ratio (1 to 3?) to French or taken down. Imagine operation without a front sign or menus until compliance, with HUGE fines for everyday infringing? And the inspectors have been busy going through everything over and over, now down to Big Cie's emails to find fault. Even English Schools must have their internal communications in English; I wonder how they can discuss curriculum! This constant policing is a grueling task, and out money goes to pay for it rather then fixing schools, hospitals and roads (we have the worst roads in County)! We are short of doctors... But overrun with inspectors!

As for the rest of Eastern Canada: Newfoundland/Labrador, Prince-Edward-Island, Nova-Scotia (provinces -like states- on the Alantic seaboard are primarily Anglophone. There are pockets of French speakers there (Acadia the biggest), as there are all over the country (even in the West, Manitoba having most French schools outside of Quebec). But there, cohabitation is peaceful. Anglos are not "threatened" and do not try to assimilate them. Bilingualism is, after all, in our Constitution!

Way more info than needed, I know. But speaking languages with someone from Québec is always risky LOL But who knows, might come in handy when watching a Canadian movie.
Have a great day!
