I said hard to get, i didn't say you couldn't get them.
And yes the codecs are "almost" obsolete, i know myself and others haven't ripped in avi in 10 years and mp4 for about 3 years

Mp4 isn't a codec. It's a container, as is avi.
Xvid and H264 are codecs. Actually you can put video encoded with either of these in AVI, MP4 or MKV.

In practice though most AVI are Xvid. And most Mp4 and MKV are H264. Some are x265.

Using muxing /demuxing tools you can convert between container losslessly.
E.g., MP4box. MKVmergeGUI, Avidemux.

Anyway, few of us have the luxury of choosing a codec and container by its merits, what is compatible with our video players is the decider.

you are of course correct.

Small point MKV is a container as well.

I figured that the Schatz problem was his video player, which is the reason i was giving the hint about obsolescence.

I understand your problem, i have copper and two teenagers as well, my heart goes out to you.
As TomMix said this is mp4 so hopefully it will play.
As for the lack of screen time you have, might i suggest some "mummy time" where you get 2-4 hours a day to use the computer or you can steam video while they play some local games
