Why are the 480p release files so large? They are usually around 400-600 mb's?

@DrDemento
Sometimes even smaller than that.
My guess here is the original file size of 4GB.
That's going to dictate how much bitrate ffmpeg is going to use for the encode.
Overall Bitrate: 1048Kbps is on the very high side.
That and the length-> Duration: 1h50m6s also dictates how big the output file will be.

Also, anything with WEB-DL in the title usually get a bit more bitrate than if they are WEBrip, etc.

Sorry to ask... I'm not very computer literate... can you quickly explain why more bitrate is a good thing? to me it's like "frames per second (analog) is it?

@ Kenny

HO, no it isn't... but it'd still like to know why it makes the image "better", and if ALL that is lost when squeezing for smaller format (is everything diminshed, or just SOME aspects of original file? (better be ridiculous once than ignorant forever) read some thinks that are either over my head or over simplified, to same result : (

Bitrate = quality
Specific to RMTeam encodes, as you know, it's all done by bots. If it was done by hand the crf could be adjusted to give it less bitrate and therefor a smaller output file size. The quality would most likely be fine as well.
To be honest, ffmpeg still mystifies me a lot.
I encode by hand so have experienced a whole range of things.
I know, from my own experience, that when the file size is large, I need to decrease the crf to get a nice quality encode at about the file size I want and vice versa.
*AI Overview
Increasing the bitrate when encoding video or audio with FFmpeg generally leads to higher quality because it allows for more data to be used to represent the media. This translates to less compression and a more accurate reproduction of the original source.*
And again, anything that has WEB-DL in the title will be given more bitrate by the bots automatically which will increase the file size.
I think this site is great. I can't complain. I just think I understand some of what is happening and why.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitrate

"In telecommunications and computing, bit rate (bitrate or as a variable R) is the number of bits that are conveyed or processed per unit of time."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bit

"The bit is the most basic unit of information in computing and digital communication. The name is a portmanteau of binary digit. The bit represents a logical state with one of two possible values. These values are most commonly represented as either "1" or "0", but other representations such as true/false, yes/no, on/off, or +/− are also widely used."

A movie files video & audio is actually a series of bits, and the higher the bit rate, the more accurate the representation of the original sources.
However, at some point, a higher bit rate (or even resolution) won't be noticeably "better" to a person.

@waanaabe

"when squeezing for smaller format (is everything diminshed, or just SOME aspects of original file?"

That's where encoding gets complicated, so the answer is 'yes' to both depending on encoding settings.

"better be ridiculous once than ignorant forever"

Self educating is never ridiculous. No one knows everything.

Bit rate & therefore file size, are not always reliable ways of "guessing' visual movie quality.
The choice of codec, xvid, x264, x265, AV1, is a factor, and most important are the codec encoding settings.
Frame rate is an easy way to increase visual quality but going from 25fps to 50fps means doubling the amount of bits which means doubling the file size, approximately.

@Zardoz

Exactly. That also explains why bright, well lit scenes receive more bitrate. So, a video shot in bright, well lit conditions will be larger than one shot at night or has many darker scenes.

All things being equal, a 480p encode will be larger than a 720p x265 encode. That's why, of course, we don't keep all thing equal when encoding.

@Kenny_McCormick

The amount of motion within the video and its speed are harder to encode and require more bits leading to larger file sizes.

Thanks guys. I think my question had to do with more with codecs/encoding setting, indirectly (the "does everything diminish or SOME aspects).

@Zardoz
All true.

@waanaabe
I forget the question, but I think the answer is it's the quality that diminishes with less bitrate.
Conversely, too much bitrate doesn't help or hurt, but will increase the file size.

@waanaabe

I answered your question in my firrst post above.

Here it is again.

"when squeezing for smaller format (is everything diminshed, or just SOME aspects of original file?"

That's where encoding gets complicated, so the answer is 'yes' to both depending on encoding settings.

To elaborate:

Depending on the chosen encoding settings & depending on what the original video source contains, different parts of the videos image frame may be encoded to varying lesser qualities, and some elements may even remain untouched. It all depends on the chosen encoder settings & what the person doing the encoding is aiming for. At some point, lowering the encoder quality settings will result in the whole of the videos images being affected and quality noticeably decreased.

If you want info on encoder settings and what strategy they are aiming for, then it gets even more complex.

@Kenny_McCormick

"it's the quality that diminishes with less bitrate"

Mostly true, but I have compared many lower bit rate 1080p & 2160p x265 PSA with equivalent YTS etc, and PSA is always better quality when analyzed. However, under normal viewing conditions they mostly look the same.

@waanaabe

To rephrase:

Yes, at some point, aiming for a lower file size will result in everything being increasingly diminished.

@Zardoz

Agreed. I sometimes collect a mishmash of different groups and encode types. In some cases I'll be watching a show and be so impressed with the quality, I'll have to take a look at the filename to see where I got it.
Sometimes, to my amazement, I'll be watching an rmteam.480p.x264 encode.
Other times, I'll be watching a PSA 720P.x265.
If not rmteam or PSA I might be watching one of my own encodes and will be very surprised by the quality.
I do either 720p.x265 in the style of PSA or I'll do a 480P.x264 in the style of rmteam.
Another good group is BONE, but he uses 1000K abr on all his 720p.x265 encodes. Overkill if you ask me, but quality over small size for me every time.
