So if they decide to go with just "Best Actor", does that mean they will only be handing out a single award instead of two?
I've honestly been wondering when will the PC hardliners take on the award categories, accusing them of being sexist, not inclusive enough, etc. I can only think of one reason why this has not happened yet: there's too much money involved, and as you have pointed out, once you start poking holes in the system, it all falls apart like a house of cards.
Honestly, I don't pay that much attention to the awards. We know it's basically just the industry patting themselves on the back and occasionally letting someone new join the club. Yet I do always try to watch as many of the Oscar-nominated films as I can, because, well, "it's the Oscars, man".
Incidentally, I've been recently professionally involved in organizing a certain awards ceremony, and I've seen firsthand how the sausage is made. It's kinda sad.
There is already no shortage of movies with women in lead roles. It's taking a bit longer with the big-budget fare, probably because top-level executives are a cowardly and superstitious lot (not to mention that they often seem to be completely out of touch with reality), but it's happening. You can only ignore half of your audience for so long.
I don't think Elon ever sits and mopes around, pondering his failures. Those kind of people rarely get anything done. I bet he doesn't even consider them "failures", just temporary setbacks and obstacles on the way to his ultimate goal, which he will sooner or later achieve anyway.
I don't usually care much for talking heads or documentaries, unless I'm really interested in the topic. Last year I watched two several hours-long documentaries made by the same team: "Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy" and "Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th". That was some seriously great stuff. I wish they'd tackle the "Halloween" series next.
I have been aware of the Nic Cage series, but since you recommend, then I will check it out. Another guy who I would think would be a good host for this is Joe Pesci, but even Scorsese had trouble getting him out of retirement for "The Irishman".
Is it just me or does Nic's hairline seem to be lower than usual? Well, with all the lockdowns and filming being shut down, it was a good time as ever to get a transplant.
Regardless of their origins, I think profanities have their uses, but if a person keeps dropping them in a conversation for no reason whatsoever, then that gets tedious pretty fast, at least for me.
Apropos of nothing, I finally watched "Psycho Goreman" last night and I heartily recommend it. It's bloody hilarious.
Until fucking next time.

> ..does that mean they will only be handing out a single award instead of two?
An option for any awards group is to have just one award for Best Actor, which is inclusive as it can get for such an award, as any human can get it, at least in a perfect world.
As to be inclusive by having zillions of awards, that's another thing involving a questionable tactic, as it only attempts to simulate a perfect word. Taken to the extreme, then everyone is the best actor, and we all get an award, as we are all special, just like everyone else.
Yes, Nic's hairline is lower. Perhaps he's getting younger, or his face is getting smaller?
I don't recognize so-called "profanities" as anything different than any other words, as the context and intent is all that matters to me. Also, most people use very offensive speech no matter what words they use or not. For example, I find all foreign languages offensive, as I don't like jibber jabber.
I agree that it can be a pain when folks use words for no reason whatsoever, as with "apropos of nothing".
> ..because top-level executives are a cowardly and superstitious lot (not to mention that they often seem to be completely out of touch with reality
I don't know about that "superstitious" claim, but they are not cowardly or completely out of touch with reality. For the most part, it's women who have been cowardly, by letting ruthless men and dykes walk all over them. If most women were truly strong, there would likely be no place for a MeToo movement.
> You can only ignore half of your audience for so long.
I doubt "they" simply ignore that market much, yet it's clear to me that things have not been fair for many talented women in an industry that has all too often required them to suck the boss man's dick. But who knows, perhaps they liked sucking the boss man's dick, but then played the victim after they got screwed over? Regardless, those men in power can pretty much keep on ignoring whomever they want. And if push comes to mighty shove, they can often just close down shop, move on, or retire, empowered by their Ayn Rand dogma or whatever.
That said, I don't care much about any of the SJW poison that trickles into my entertainment, and I don't need to be woke or whatever. I just care to be entertained by whatever I happen to enjoy. For example, I've enjoyed Star Trek Discovery, but not because it features queers and freaks, but simply because I think it's good Sci-Fi.

@Gandolf
You mock, but I think some people really do deserve an award for the role they're playing IRL.
Now I have this idea for a kind of anti-award which would be given to people who we thought were wholesome, but turn out to be scumbags. Can't think of a name for it yet, but I'm open to suggestions.
"Jibber Jabber"? Que? Sounds like you never had a girl speak French to you
I find some languages really pleasant to listen to. Like, when I'm watching something Japanese or Korean, and a guy starts yelling, that always makes me smile.
Accents fun too. Sometime ago I watched this British series titled "Curfew", and there was a scene where Sean Bean says "snug like a bug in a rug", but it sounded more like "snoog like a boog in a roog". I loved that.
Also, since you're feeling so mighty and powerful, I suggest you take a trip to France and try asking for directions in English. There's a high likelihood they'll just ignore you, especially if you put on a British accent
The "cowardly and superstitious lot" bit is a quote about criminals from some old Batman comic book, I think. I was just having a bit of fun, as usual. But if you want an example, here you go: https://time.com/3847432/marvel-ceo-leaked-email/.
Please note the percentage of audience at the bottom.
Please also note that Ike was (is?) a notable Trump supporter
As for the "out of touch with reality" part, I could point to the 3 (or is it 4?) "Avatar" sequels as an example. The original was hot shit for a minute, but then people realized it's basically just "Pocahontas" in space. And then 3-D turned out to just be a fad. The movie's rarely being talked about for such a huge hit, probably because there's not much to it beyond the surface.
Also, although there are obviously exceptions, belated sequels rarely do well. It reminds of another quite popular movie that relied heavily on its visuals: "Sin City". When they finally made the second one, ten years later, few people cared.
We also can't be sure how the post-COVID theater landcape will look like.
Or maybe Cameron has an ace up his sleeve, and I'm completely wrong. After all, he has yet to make a movie that hasn't been a smash hit (unless we're counting "Piranha II: The Spawning", and nobody ever does). But if it was my money being spent, I'd be worried.
Some of what you're saying reminded me of another idea I had some time ago: there are now so many of those cancelled, #Metoo'd and otherwise disgraced folks that they could easily team up and continue to make movies. It would look something like this:
Directed by: Roman Polański (segment 1), Woody Allen (segment 2), Bryan Singer (segment 3)
Written by: Louis C.K., based on a story by J.K. Rowling
Starring: Johnny Depp, Mel Gibson, Kevin Spacey, Armie Hammer, Jussie Smollett, Roseanne Barr
Produced by Harvey Weinstein
Music by Marilyn Manson
They might have trouble finding a distributor, though...
Have you seen "The Assistant" (2019) and "Promising Young Woman" (2020)? They're both heart-warming tales about powerful self-made man having to defend themselves from vengeful and careerist women trying to take them down. Highly recommended!

@BobbyTheNero
I often jest, but I don't think I have mocked, and if I did, I think that's a rather silly thing to focus on, yet I am a fan of silly, so no harm done.
As for actors "who we thought were wholesome, but turn out to be scumbags", I don't care. I only care about the talent of the actors, as to if I value their work or not. But I know I'm pretty much alone with such thinking, as most folks can't enjoy and/or profit from all there is, as they hold extreme emotions of rage and such over rather unrelated things they find disgusting and such.
For example, I know a dopey dude acts as if he hates a lot of media, with his only reasoning "that person is so full of themselves". He says that about many actors, again and again, with rage, as if they killed and ate his puppy. I think his thinking is politically motivated by some crazy list kept on some crazy site. Yet this dopey dude is indeed crazy, so it might be all or more of that.
As for accents, that reminds of Arnold Schwarzenegger, as most think he has an accent, but I'm sure that's a speech impediment.
> ..Sounds like you never had a girl speak French to you
That's correct, but that's because she had my dick in her mouth.
> ..because top-level executives are a cowardly and superstitious lot
Well, that claim still isn't true, but perhaps it's likely true with top-level executives who are women.
> ..they often seem to be completely out of touch with reality
Being that you used "seem" then that is related to your perception and opinion of things, which is fine, but rather extreme, and of which I don't see it that way, as I prefer to focus on the facts.
> We also can't be sure how the post-COVID theater landcape will look like.
Sure, but we can still place bets. For example, I made a killing of the stock market, but then my ex butler stole it all, and donated it to MeToo and BLM, which I was planning to do anyway, so no harm done. At least that's the story I told my accountants, and thus I don't have to for any taxes for that loss.
> Honestly, I don't pay that much attention to the awards.
Ditto. Furthermore, I don't think anyone deserves a reward or should expect one, as I think one's success is best measured by things the given individual values. For example, I don't need an award to know I am better than everyone else in all that I do, which is much of nothing. In fact, if more people did nothing as I do, I'm sure the world would be a much better place.
> Have you seen "The Assistant" (2019) and "Promising Young Woman" (2020)?
Nope. But please keep recommending movies, as it helps me to know what movies to avoid.
Seriously though, I had simply passed on those, but they are now on my sub-radar.
